Paying for Speed
Is your ISP giving you the speed you're paying for?

If you have a broadband connection, chances are you're paying at least $40 a month for basic internet access. Still, many consumers aren't getting what they pay for. Check the speed of your connection and see how it measures up to everyone else's here. With some broadband connections, the speed is heavily dependent on the number of other users using the same service in your area, especially when on a local network (wireless or not). For residential customers, cable is generally the fastest option, but the service isn't as consistent as DSL, which is steadily slower than cable but faster than dial-up. Are you getting your money's worth? If your bandwidth reading is lower than others in your area, it's worth considering a new provider, since the increasing demand for high-speed connection has more people blazing across the Web than ever before (if you've had broadband since the days when it was a luxury, chances are your speed is not as fast as it once was because the burden of the increasing number of former-dial-up surfers is shared by everyone). So go to the bandwidth meter, and be forewarned-- it may take you longer to get there than your bill for high speed access would have you believe.
